Signed over name on baseball card?

Unread post by NinersFan11 »

I recently received an autograph from Brent Morel on a 2011 Topps rookie card like the one below. He signed it right over where his name is printed at the bottom. He used a blue Sharpie (the regular kind, not extra fine) so it would have shown up if he signed it on the grass. Does anyone know why he signed it over his name? It barely shows up and I can't see it that well, but I checked it against other ones on Google Images and I'm pretty sure it's authentic, but none of the other ones were signed over the name. Has anyone had this happen with any autograph or do you know the reason for doing it or why he might have done it? Thank you!

PS It doesn't bother me that he signed in that location, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had an experience like that or if you know why a player would sign it there. I think it's kinda cool that I might have something unique, if it is unique :D

He was probably rushing, did you just get the card back? How long did it take? I have to send to Brent!

Agreed - don't really think there was any motive behind it except being speedy & sloppy...especially since autographed cards are a crapshoot - some people love them, others feel they instantly make the card worth far less and dislike them.

@DavidWright5Fan: It was actually from Spring Training, I was just looking through my autographs today and remembered I wanted to ask but I forgot about it until now. I sent it on 3/3/12 and received it on 3/15/12.

Maybe he was having a bad day. Maybe he did it to keep you from copying his signature. It could be worse.

I've seen a player trace over the facsimile autograph just to be a jerk.

I have also seen a player say they already signed a card because of the facsimile autograph on the front and then sign only on the back.

Don't take it personnel. It is just an autograph. Send to other players and move on.

Enjoy the hobby!
