This weekend, I get to meet Mike Grell. I'm super stoked. I have a Green Arrow #34 that he actually wrote and Dan Jurgens did the artwork for. I plan to send my comic to Mr. Jurgens immediately after I get to meet Mr. Grell.

That's sweet! Congratulations on getting to meet Mike Grell, be sure and let us know how he is and how your experience with him is! I don't think it gets any better than his artwork on both Green Arrow (although I DO enjoy Andrea Sorrentino's work with Jeff LeMire writing) and of course Warlord! His style-especially on the covers!-was so strong, out of ALL the 'warrior fantasy' style titles, such as Conan and Arion, etc., I think Grell's work on Warlord smites them all! :-)

Also, in talking about the Grell signing, I was reminded I forgot to post about meeting Neal Adams way back in March!

The first signature was free, and each additional autograph was only $10! I only wish it was taking place on a payweek for me, as funds were quite tight! But I took my 12 year-old son with me, who had spent the past week researching all Adams has contributed to comics history, so I was very happy and proud that my youngster was every bit as excited as I was!

We got there maybe twenty minutes before the signing was scheduled to be over, and were the last ones in line, which I always love! This one was no different, as having no one in line behind us enabled us to talk as much and ask him as many questions as we could think of. It was surprisingly difficult though, as I was pretty starstruck by him! He, on the other hand, was as comfortable as can be-and it may just be the typical New Yorker in him-but he was VERY liberal in his usage of foul language! Now I'm not offended by any word that could come from a human's mouth, and I don't shelter my kids from much either, but be forewarned if YOU are offended or keep your kids from such things. Otherwise, Adams was as totally cordial and candid as you could ask him to be. I don't remember a ton of the questions I asked except the first, which was whether or not the publishing companies prefer the cover artist to sign their name in a visible spot on the front of the book. That was personal for me as an autograph collector because the FIRST name I search for to send to is the cover artist. His response: 'They don't give a sh** WHAT you do! They don't CARE what the thing looks like as long as it sells.' I thought that was very interesting.
When I can think of more of the ten minutes of conversation, I'll post it. As for our autograph haul, since my son and I are separate customers, we both got our stuff signed free. I got the #1 issue of Valeri The She-Bat (I really liked a lot of those old Continuity Comics titles growing up in the 90's) and

(cont.) and Justin, my son, got a recent Batman issue signed, which Adams had both written and done artwork for. I'd had his pencil sketch variant cover at home and we decided on that one. It turned out beautiful, and overall was an amazing experience! I'm very happy we decided to go and that my son was in on it too! He'll never forget meeting a legend!

Mike Grell was super Nice. His deal for signatures was the first autograph was free, all others were $4. I had an issue of Green Arrow that he actually wrote and Dan Jurgens did both the cover art and the drawing for the issue. I plan to get it signed by Mr. Jurgens as well. But, back to Mr. Grell......He was super nice. My wife had a ton of questions about his artwork he had for sale. He was very nice and answered every question she had. The nly down part was the rep from from the production company that represents him, coolwaters productions. She was doing her best to sell his pieces of work that the cheapest piece we saw was $150. But, they were original pieces that were from Green Arrow, John Sable, Warlord, etc. A lot were his test pieces where he just beginning work. But, other than that, he was great! I also met Michael Golden. I got an issue of X-men that had Rogue on the cover signed. He was great to talk to as well. His prices for autographs were $3, and a Certificate of Authenticity for $3 as well. He was super Nice!!! Overall, great time!

I also got to meet Mr. Grell at the Fanboy Expo in Knoxville. I got a 11x17 Green Arrow Profile sketch for $50 and I have to say it is pretty awesome.
